A New Take on Namaste

It’s not often that we find a new innovative way to better an age-old gem. That’s unless you meet Ashley Braun and Christy Skarulis, the owners of GripTheMat, a yoga social company looking to bring a new spin to the Hindu practice. Their mission, “to encourage health and wellness by providing a yoga practice in a social setting, in unique venues, to modernize the practice, and make it unconventional”. The two ladies, who met during their yoga teaching training, soon found out that they had plenty more than yoga in common. They are both originally from Florida and shared displeasure with their everyday lives, only finding peace and joy when they spent twenty-eight hours a week together in yoga training. From there, the two immediately hit it off and decided to drop everything they were doing and create a yoga company with a new spin and meaning. They’re goal “to provide young professionals, no matter how busy, the space and opportunity to explore yoga, work on wellness, and not sacrifice the important face-to-face contact of socialization and friendship”. They believe that every person needs to have a balance between socialization and wellness.

The company has two trademark events, “Vinyasa To Vino”, an hour yoga session followed by a wine tasting, and “Bendy Brunch”, an hour yoga session followed by a brunch with complimentary mimosa featuring a select master chef. Just a few months into their operation the ladies have seen instant success and acceptance. In early October their “Bendy Brunch” event brought out 70 patrons. We set down with the ladies at Hierarchy in Adams Morgan at their “Vinyasa To Vino” event in early October, you can see the interview in the video below. So yogis and yogins, head over to GripTheMat to purchase tickets and allow these ladies to help you better your warrior pose. Namaste Sophistocrats!
